Subdomains |
READ THIS BEFORE SETTING UP A SUBDOMAIN!
To create a sub domain cPanel asks for the name you wish to use. MAKE SURE the subdomain name you give it doesn't have a folder already named that name.
Valid subdomain may contain any letter or number as well as hyphen, but must begin with an alphabet character.
What is a subdomain?
Subdomains are a way of creating separate accounts within your master account, which are accessed as separate URLs. For example, you could set up a "test" subdomain on your master account "opalhost.com", which would be accessed as "test.opalhost.com".
However, you do not create a new cPanel when you create a subdomain. You still perform the administration functions for the subdomain through your master cPanel.
Practically, a subdomain is a sub folder within the public_http level of your account that has it's own cgi-bin directory. The "test" example above creates a new top-level folder called test, with a cgi-bin sub-folder. Upload your files for the subdomain to this location, including a separate home file (such as index.htm).

Addon Domains |
READ THIS BEFORE SETTING UP AN ADDON DOMAIN!
Make sure that you update the nameservers for your addon domain at your registrar with the same nameservers as for your main domain (see welcome e-mail). You cannot create an addon domain if your dns hasn't propagated to the server already. So you will need to wait 24-48 hours before attempting to create your addon domain.
Do not put 'www' in the addon domain name!
What is an addon domain?
An addon domain is a fully functional domain that is pointed to a subdomain. With the Addon domain feature in cPanel you can create a separate domain next to your main domain on your account. The HTML contents of a subdomain goes into a subfolder of the /public_html/ folder in your account.
So if you would add a domain named auto.com and your main domain is car.com, cPanel creates a subdomain called auto.car.com. The contents which goes in the /public_html/auto/ directory will be visible via your browser under: auto.car.com AND auto.com.
You can create POP mail accounts with auto.com and also the FTP can be accessed with auto.com (user for FTP should be auto@car.com).
I added an addon domain. Why did it say a subdomain added?
Every addon domain also creates a subdomain. An Addon is basically a subdomain that can also be accessed by the full domain. So for the visitor it is transparent, because they see only the full domain in the URL bar.
